Table of Contents
Knowing the exam pattern helps you decide what to study, how long to spend on each subject and which practice to do. This guide explains the general structure of the BPSC combined competitive examination. The marks, number of papers and rules can change, so always check the latest official notification before you plan.
Stage 1: Preliminary examination
The Prelims is an objective, multiple-choice test of General Studies. It acts as a screening test – you must score above the cut-off to qualify for the Mains. Questions cover history, geography, polity, economy, science, current affairs and Bihar-specific topics. Speed, accuracy and negative-marking management matter most. Practise with Prelims PYQs.
Stage 2: Main examination
The Mains is descriptive. It tests understanding, analysis and writing ability. Language papers and General Studies papers are included, and the scheme is announced in each advertisement. Marks in this stage count towards your final merit. Prepare with regular answer writing practice.
Stage 3: Interview (personality test)
Shortlisted candidates face an interview panel. The panel looks at clarity of thought, knowledge of Bihar and India, communication and integrity. Read about your state, your hometown, your academic background and current issues.
How the pattern should shape your preparation
- For Prelims: learn facts, practise MCQs and revise current affairs.
- For Mains: go deeper in each topic and practise structured answers.
- For Interview: build opinions on Bihar's development and current events.
